Saffordites are a lovely lavender colored natural glass stone found only in one place on Earth. Often called Saffordite tektites or sometimes referred to as Arizona Tektites, they are really members of the obsidian glass family of rocks.

Saffordites usually have a round or oval shape which supports the idea that they have been tumbled and shaped by agitation in flowing water. The surface of Saffordites is usually pitted with cup-shaped depressions similar to the ones found in tektites. Some Saffordites are gemmy clear and sparkling when held to a light. Other Saffordites are banded or translucent instead of clear. Some are opaque but each type of Saffordite will appear very black when seen without light from behind. When they are viewed with a light from behind they truly show off their inner beauty. The banded Saffordites are often especially interesting when backlit.

The Caldwell meteorite was originally classified as a chondrite and appears as such in the 1985 edition of the Catalog of Meteorites. It is now been reclassified as an L impact-melt breccia. We were fortunate to obtain a nice chunk of Caldwell that has abundant areas of melt. Caldwell is quite a fractured meteorite and this determines the size pieces that are produced when cutting.

Some of the larger flakes of metal are two-tone in color and appear to be both nickel iron and troilite. Some large chondrules 3/16th of an inch in diameter have been found during cutting. Northwest Africa (NWA) 10828

NWA 10828 was found in a mixed box of meteorites intended to become slices. But its unusual appearance of chondrules that were eroding out of the ground mass and standing out free of surrounding rock led to it being sent for classification. The single stone of 541 grams had a thick outer layer of fragile material where the ground mass was nearly gone. This outer material became large and small fragments often with the imprint of the choundrules showing as cup depressions. Such replacement of the matrix with calcite is unusual and the distinct large choundrules make for a very interesting H4 meteorite.

This find of H impact melt meteorites is an uncommon event and offers a great chance for collectors to obtain a seldom seen meteorite type.

Chico Meteorites For Sale

As an impact melt meteorite Chico is fascinating to look at. The metal in parts of the meteorite is now tiny blebs of microscopic size that give areas of the stone a silvery metallic sheen. The mineral portion of the meteorite has been melted so much that it runs through the stone as swirling and twisted bands of glassy rock. There are areas bordering the melt that have preserved in them a more normal chondritic appearance. The specimens we are selling were cut from large slices that had been polished on one side already. We have kept them the way they are with one side finished to polish and the other as laboratory cut. The unpolished side actually shows features of the stone that are concealed when polished.

Achondrite meteorites are meteorites without the round chondrule structures. Eucrites are one of the many types of achondrites. Thought to form on larger bodies in space where the rocks can differientiate they have more igneous type compositions. When a meteorite is made up of angular bits of rock it is called a breccia. If it is made of bits from several sources it is called a polymict breccia. This stone is a polymict eucrite breccia.

Aguas Zarcas CM2 Meteorite

The Aguas Zarcas meteorite is a CM2 carbonaceous chondrite. This is one of the most exciting meteorite types for science as they contain water and organic compounds left from the creation of the solar system. Aguas Zarcas has been classified also as an Anomalous CM-2 so it has some features that make it especially unusual.

Aguas Zarcas stones have a black matrix with Calcium Aluminum Inclusions (CAIs) and chondrules. This is the largest fall of CM-2 meteorites in recent history and the research on it will continue for years perhaps decades to come. This is a meteorite that truly should be in every meteorite collection.
