    Meteor Crater - Third Edition
    by James P. Tobin
    December 2008

    Synopsis
This is the third and much expanded edition of James Tobin's history of the first hundred years of investigations at Meteor Crater. Included in the volume are narrative tours of the sites on the crater rim and slopes, as well as a narrative hike of all the historic locations on the floor of the crater. The second half of the book is devoted to historical paper by several of the earliest investigators. These papers are presented close to their original form with all their photographs if they had them. Commentary by James is limited to before and after these early works to not alter their form. Reading this work is as close to visiting the crater as can be done with a book.

  • NWA 10828 Meteorite 5.2g

    NWA 10828 Meteorite 5.2g

    Northwest Africa (NWA) 10828

NWA 10828 was found in a mixed box of meteorites intended to become slices. But its unusual appearance of chondrules that were eroding out of the ground mass and standing out free of surrounding rock led to it being sent for classification. The single stone of 541 grams had a thick outer layer of fragile material where the ground mass was nearly gone. This outer material became large and small fragments often with the imprint of the choundrules showing as cup depressions. Such replacement of the matrix with calcite is unusual and the distinct large choundrules make for a very interesting H4 meteorite.

    Chico Meteorites For Sale

As an impact melt meteorite Chico is fascinating to look at. The metal in parts of the meteorite is now tiny blebs of microscopic size that give areas of the stone a silvery metallic sheen. The mineral portion of the meteorite has been melted so much that it runs through the stone as swirling and twisted bands of glassy rock. There are areas bordering the melt that have preserved in them a more normal chondritic appearance. The specimens we are selling were cut from large slices that had been polished on one side already. We have kept them the way they are with one side finished to polish and the other as laboratory cut. The unpolished side actually shows features of the stone that are concealed when polished.
