Mreïra L6 Meteorite

Location: Tiris Zemmour, Mauritania
Find / Fall: Probable Fall 2012
Classification: Chondrite L6
The Mreïra meteorite is a witnessed fall that occurred on December 16, 2012. Several schoolchildren in the region saw the fireball explode in the sky during the day, and villagers nearby reported hearing loud detonations. Following the explosion, meteorite hunters recovered approximately 6 kilograms of material from the strewnfield, called “Stailt Omgrain.” These specimens consist of fresh stones that are primarily covered in a dark, well-preserved fusion crust.
Mreïra is officially classified as an L6 ordinary chondrite. This classification means the meteorite has a relatively low iron content and its internal structure was significantly altered by heat while it was still part of a larger asteroid. Because the stones were collected shortly after they fell to Earth, they remain in near-pristine condition. The interior of Mreïra meteorites exhibits shock-melt pockets and fractured silicate grains.
