Northwest Africa 11081 Achondrite Meteorite
Find / Fall: Found 2016
Location: Morocco
Classification: Eucrite-unbr
Total Known Weight: 1,417 grams
Northwest Africa 11081 s a stone meteorite that was found in the Sahara Desert and named in 2016. It is classified as a eucrite, which is a group of meteorites that scientists believe come from the crust of an asteroid. While these were long thought to come only from the large asteroid Vesta, newer studies show they might actually come from other “Vesta-like” asteroids that also had volcanic activity early in our solar system’s history.
This meteorite was found as a one stone with a dark, weathered outer layer called a fusion crust. As an achondrite, NWA 11081 does not have any of the tiny, round mineral beads called chondrules that most stone meteorites contain. The inside looks very much like volcanic basalt rock from Earth, with a mix of grey, white, and greenish crystals. It contains almost no visible metal, which shows it formed from cooling lava on the surface of its parent asteroid.
