NWA 15523 CM2 Meteorite

Find / Fall: Find 2022
Location: Northwest Africa
Classification: Carbonaceous Chondrite CM2
Total Known Weight: 780 grams

Northwest Africa 15523, or NWA 15523, is a rare and scientifically interesting stone meteorite found in 2022. It was discovered in the Sahara Desert near Hassi Khebi and has a very small total mass of only 780 grams. It is classified as a CM2 carbonaceous chondrite, a special group of meteorites that are among the oldest and most primitive materials in the solar system, dating back over 4.5 billion years.

This meteorite has a dark, charcoal-like interior. As a CM2 chondrite, it contains tiny, round mineral beads called chondrules that are much smaller than those seen in other stone meteorites. It also features small, white specks known as CAIs (Calcium-Aluminum Inclusions), which are some of the first solids to ever form in space. Because NWA 15523 contains water-bearing minerals and organic compounds, it serves as a “time capsule” from the very beginning of our solar system.
