Hassi Messaoud 001 is an incredibly rare Martian meteorite that was found near El Borma, on March 11, 2020. It is classified as a nakhlite, which is one of the most prestigious and rarest types of rocks from the Red Planet. While most Martian meteorites are shergottites, nakhlites are much harder to find—there are only about 34 approved nakhlite meteorites in existence. These rocks are highly valued because they formed from cooling lava on Mars about 1.3 billion years ago, acting as a direct sample of Martian volcanic history.
