Canyon Diablo “shale” are terrestrially weathered fragments of the IAB-MG iron bolide that impacted the Arizona desert approximately 50,000 years ago, forming Barringer Crater. These specimens consist predominantly of secondary iron oxides—primarily goethite and limonite—resulting from the long-term oxidation of the original nickel-iron matrix. Although the primary metallic phases have been largely replaced, the fragments typically retain the original nickel content and characteristic lamellar structures indicative of their meteoritic origin.
