Bassikounou meteorites fell after a fireball was witnessed on October 16, 2006 over Mauritania. A 3165 gram stone was found the following morning. Hundreds of stones large and small have been found since.
Bassikounou is a type H5 chondrite. The meteorite has abundant nickel-iron metal and rare copper which is found in both the metal and troilite. Some shock veins are found in Bassikounou stones. A beautiful black fusion crust is on most of our specimens. Windows have been polished into some which were broken, other specimens are complete or nearly complete.
